Klien is an 'option' for Spyker

11 September 2006

Team Principal Racing Colin Kolles sees Christian Klien as a possible driver for the new Spyker MF1 racing team for 2007 and has not ruled out him playing a part for the team this season now that the Austrian will be replaced at Red Bull by Robert Doornbos for the last three races.

"Christian Klien is definitely an option for next season," Kolles told F1Racing.net.

And what about this season now he's a free agent?

"We will finish the season with our current race driver that is one thing that is for sure. As a Friday driver we have various options and he is indeed an option," he revealed.

Klien was keen to clear up - in an exclusive interview with F1Racing.net on the 31st August - that he had not dismissed the possibility of joining Midland despite speculation saying he had. He also admitted "the only seats available for next year are at Midland and Super Aguri". Moreover, Midland has made the positive announcements of Spyker's takeover and subsequent investment and of Mike Gascoyne joining the team as Chief Technology Officer, making the team the more attractive option for the 23-year-old, who recently revealed on Austrian channel ORF that he had turned down the chance to race in Champ Car to pursue "further discussions" with F1 teams.

Furthermore Kolles revealed that an announcement over an engine deal is coming "very shortly" as the face of the new Spyker team continues to be unmasked.
