Kubica surprised by maiden podium

Robert Kubica admits being surprised at taking his first F1 podium finish at the Italian Grand Prix. The Polish driver made a blistering start from sixth and was third by the end of the first lap. He even led the race for a few laps during the first set of pit stops.

"I'm really surprised to finish third," Kubica said. "We know we had good tyres for this race, we were a bit concerned in qualifying but once we got into the final knockout I knew we had a very consistent car for the race. I had a good start but had locked my tyres in the first chicane which made the first stint difficult until we replaced the tyres."

"We came out of the second stop side by side with Fernando, but his engine blew and then Felipe had to pit and the end of the race was quite easy for me," he added.
