Schumi brave to retire - Hill

12 September 2006

Michael Schumacher's original arch-rival, Damon Hill, says his decision to retire at the end of the season is a brave one. Schumacher and Hill battled for the championship in 1994 and 1995 - Schumacher famously colliding with Hill in the 1994 finale at Adelaide on his way to his first crown (picture above). Hill had to wait until Schumacher moved to Ferrari in 1996 to win the title.

"It's a brave decision to stop doing something he loves," Hill was quoted as saying by the BBC. "We sort of know how he'll be remembered, but over time his success will mark an era where his dedication to winning gave the championship colour."

Hill was 39 when he retired from F1 in 1999, Schumacher is 37 and turns 38 in January.

"I think he'll be doubly motivated to win this year's championship," Hill added. "He's definitely capable of winning more races and I think it's very hard to give that up."
