Wurz sets the pace in first practice session
29 September 2006 / Results / PhotosToday's first practice session was a standard exchange of fastest laps between Williams' Alexander Wurz and Honda's Anthony Davidson with Wurz just pipping the Brit to top of the timesheets with a 1.35.574s. Jenson Button, Michael Schumacher and Neel Jani followed to make up the five fastest whilst Alexandre Prémat deserves a mention for posting the sixth fastest time, driving in his maiden Friday practice session in the newly liveried Spyker MF1.
Also on duty at his first Formula One weekend was GP2 contender Michael Ammermuller, who is filling in for the promoted Robert Doornbos at Red Bull Racing. Ninth fastest, he was only half a second slower than fellow countryman and the recently impressive Sebastian Vettel.
The session, in warm and dry conditions, was otherwise uneventful and it took a while for the times to come down as the rarely used circuit appeared green at first before the rubber started to stick to the surface and grip improved. No light was shed on how the drivers' championship battle between Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso will pan out as the German only did one timed lap and the Renaults, running a modified version of the V8 used at Monza this weekend, didn't run.
