Barrichello escapes penalty

Barrichello escapes penalty

30 September 2006

Rubens Barrichello escaped a penalty and kept third place on the grid for the Chinese Grand Prix after he was cleared of blocking Pedro de la Rosa in qualifying. The Brazilian and Spaniard were both called before stewards to give their accounts after the qualifying session.

The FIA confirmed afterwards that no further action would be taken. The investigation found that the usual blue-light warning at the end of the pit lane did not work and no blue flag signal was given to Barrichello as he emerged from the pits.

De la Rosa had to take action to avoid the Honda. Following the palaver at Monza the FIA has confirmed it will only punish drivers who have been deemed to have deliberately blocked another car.
