McLaren boss cagey on Hamilton

11 October 2006

McLaren remains cagey over whether it will give Lewis Hamilton his first F1 drive at next week's Brazilian Grand Prix. Hamilton was impressive in his first official test for McLaren at Silverstone and since then the rumour has been that he could replace de la Rosa for the final round of the season.

However, McLaren boss Ron Dennis remains cautious. "I can't see throwing him in at the deep end is a particularly smart thing to do," Dennis said. "I'd rather see Lewis as prepared as he could be to have a chance of racing for McLaren in the future."

Hamilton is testing again this week at Jerez, but Dennis denies it's a final evaluation.

"We're not going into this test to evaluate his abilities," Dennis added. "That's not the objective. "It's to give him more mileage on a different type of circuit. No decision has been taken, but as and when it is we'll announce it."
