Wurz pips Friday testers
20 October 2006 / Results / PhotosThe final Friday practice session of the season saw the top Friday testers fighting it out for the fastest lap time, with Alexander Wurz of Williams coming out on top with a 1:12.547s. Honda's Anthony Davidson was a tenth slower in second, followed by Sebastian Vettel of BMW, who had spent most of the session vying with Michael Schumacher at the sharp end of the timesheets.
The Friday tester, who has just been confirmed as BMW's reserve and test driver for 2007, was on track with his retiring hero for the last foreseeable time and was accordingly sporting a good bye message of "Danke Michael" on the back of his rear wing. Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Honda's Jenson Button rounded off the top five.
Today's second session was a lot busier than this morning's and finally the spectators got to see Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso out on track. The German was just over a tenth of a second quicker than his Spanish rival with a 1:13.713s. There was also a noteworthy performance from Super Aguri's Franck Montagny who will be shifting testing duties to the Toyota team next season. He went eighth quickest with a 1:13.792s, which made Super Aguri racer Sakon Yamomoto thinking that he could go quick too, before he spun dramatically, unable to improve on his rather modest best of 1:18.321s and almost smashing into Alonso in the process. The only other casualty of the session was Robert Doornbos, who stopped out on track.
