Mosley wants more F1 races outside Europe

16 November 2006

During a meeting with news reporters and BMW's Burkhard Goeschel in Munich Max Mosley has admitted he believes that there are too many Formula 1 races in Europe compared to the number of races outside Europe. Mosley wouldn't be surprised if the calendar would count 20 races a year soon.

Speaking about the importance of having Formula 1 races in Europe Mosley said: "They're important but there are still a disproportionate number of races in Europe."

But we keep on losing races in Europe. "This is the trend," said Mosley. "If you look at the Olympic Games, for instance, over the last 100 years around 50% of them have been in Europe and that is a little bit out of balance and we are even worse. But we will get to the right balance between European and non-European races as markets development. Places like India, China, Russia, South America, Central America, they are all very important markets."

Mosley would like to have another race in North America for the sake of the car manufacturers. He explained: "America and Europe are the two biggest markets for them. So we would like to see another race in North America and probably not lose that many in Europe. The ultimate sacrifice may have to be made by the teams having 20 races. That is to be discussed," explained Mosley.
