Zanardi returns in a Formula 1 car

On Thursday Alessandro Zanardi made his return in a Formula One car. The last time the Italian drove a Formula 1 car was in 1999 as a WilliamsF1 driver. Zanardi drove a couple of installation laps at Valencia in the BMW Sauber F1 car.

Zanardi, who lost both of his legs in a terrible ChampCar crash in Germany, never expected to return in a Formula 1 car. This weekend he will do some more demonstration runs during the BMW Formula World Finals. 

The BMW Sauber F1 engineers made a few changes to the car to make it possible for Zanardi to accelerate and brake with his steering wheel. After driving three installation laps Zanardi said: "It was incredible! Sometimes I had to take my hand of the steering wheel though, but it was a great experience."
