Todt has 'very good feeling' about Kimi

07 December 2006

Kimi Raikkonen arrives at Ferrari's base in Maranello under a large shadow that has been cast by Michael Schumacher's legend. The Finn will not be able to test for his new team until next year when his McLaren contract expires, but he is already being tipped favourite for the 2007 drivers' championship. Ferrari boss Jean Todt is confident that the media hype will not faze the 27-year-old.

"I have a very good feeling with Kimi," Todt told the Times.

"I am sure that Kimi will have a very good enjoyment here at Ferrari, where he will be able to deliver. My responsibility, our responsibility, will be to allow Kimi to work as best he can and to protect him."

Continuity has been key to Ferrari's success over the past decade. Michael Schumacher raced for the Italian giants for 11 seasons and Todt hopes Raikkonen can emulate the German's commitment to the cause.

"People who work at Ferrari have stayed for ten years, so I really hope that Kimi will stay for the next ten years at Ferrari."

The French team boss did not give anything away as to which of his young stars he thinks will take over the mantle piece left by seven-time world champion Schumacher.

"Felipe is going to drive for Ferrari, Kimi is going to drive for Ferrari — there never has been a No 1 or No 2. Time will tell who has the best chance to compete for Ferrari for the championship."
