'Andretti should just enjoy his F1 debut'

13 December 2006

The Honda F1 team invited Marco Andretti to Jerez de la Frontera this week in order to try their Formula 1 car. The young IRL star will have his Formula One debut on Friday with Honda. Honda F1 teamboss Nick Fry said it is a reward for his achievements and his should just enjoy his first run.

Speaking to SpeedTV Fry said about Andretti's upcoming F1 debut: "I want him to come away and feel that he has enjoyed his first run in an F1 car, and he's learned something from it. It's no more than that at this stage. He's 19 years old, and he hasn't been to Europe before in his life. He hasn't driven a single-seater since September. This is, if you like, a reward because of his achievements in America. End of story.

"I would not read anything more into it in terms of any great expectations of one test on a Friday in Jerez. He's got a contract with Andretti Green going forward for a couple of years. He's pleased to be given a go in an F1 car, would be unfair on him to expect too much from one day."

Fry admitted he will keep an eye on Andretti's career in IRL: "He's done very well in the IRL, and he's clearly very talented, and we're always interested in young, talented drivers. We will obviously be keeping an eye on his progress, but it's very, very early days."
