Symonds: Kovalainen could win a race

12 January 2007

Renault's engineering director Pat Symonds wouldn't be surprised if we see Renault's rookie Heikki Kovalainen win a race in his debut season. The Finn impressed Renault as the team's 2006 test driver and will race alongside Fisichella in 2007.

Speaking at the Autosport International Show Pat Symonds said he has no doubts whether Kovalainen will make a significant impact during his debut season in Formula 1. "When we are at this stage in about a year and look back at 2007, I think what we will have seen is that Heikki has had some fantastic races," said Symonds. "I wouldn't put it past him to win a race this year - even as a rookie, it could happen. And we're also look at some spectacular mistakes and sort of think 'why on earth did he do that?'. But this is all part of the learning process."

The Renault team will launch their 2007 contender in Amsterdam on the 24th of January.
