Symonds doesn't want to be team boss

13 January 2007

Renault engineering director and master race strategist Pat Symonds says he does not want to become a team principal amid speculation that Renault could be grooming him for that role. Symonds will be handing over some of his day-to-day responsibilities at the circuit to chief race engineer Alan Permane.

"I'm an engineer at heart," Symonds said when asked if he might one day take over from Briatore at the helm. "That's where my strengths lie and that's where my interests are. The change of role at Renault is just to give the young guys their head a bit."

"We have so many good people in our team and if I was the old fogey sitting there forever they'd leave," he added. "So I want them to move on and hope that we've brought them up well and trained them and want them to take the responsibilities."
