At the launch of the new MP4-22, McLaren team-mates Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton expressed their excitement at the prospect of racing each other. The double world champion is hoping that the young Brit's energy can help him and the team reach their potential.

"Lewis is very young, very talented and very passionate about Formula 1," said the Spaniard.

"When you have this opportunity at 22 years old to drive for a top team like Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, you put so much energy and passion into the drive that it can only be a help to the team. Because of all the energy there is in everything Lewis will do I think we can be a really strong team. I can bring some experience from the last couple of years of fighting at the top and Lewis can bring some new, fresh ideas and we will push each other to the maximum, because we both want to do our best."

Meanwhile the prospect of being judged alongside the obvious talent of Alonso would be a gruelling one for most F1 debutants. However, Hamilton is relishing the challenge of going head to head with the Spanish maestro.

"It is truly an honour for me to be given this opportunity to work alongside Fernando in my first year as a Formula 1 driver. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what he has achieved," said the 22-year-old.

"The shear size of the challenge of working with him and competing against him is what is most exciting. All of my former teammates have been hugely competitive and the challenge and excitement comes from having to find the answers to the most important question, 'just how far do I need to push myself to beat that person and just how far can I go?' With Fernando being a two time World Champion, I know I have to dig deeper than ever before which is what I love about being a racing driver," he added.
