Hamilton does not fear Alonso

Hamilton does not fear Alonso

22 January 2007

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton is ready to take on the challenge with Fernando Alonso at the Woking based team. The young Briton has said he is ready to battle with the best and beat the best.

"At the end of the day, I am such a strong competitor," said Hamilton. "Whatever I do I want to be up against the best and beat the best out there. I am working next to the best driver, so I am able to compare myself to him, to learn from everything that he does and to eventually try to beat him.

"I'm just very realistic. He (Alonso) is a two-time world champion, so he knows all the tracks, he knows what an F1 car is like, he knows the ins and the outs and he's been in there for a few years, whereas I am still learning. I have a lot to learn. He's going to be the No 1. He's my benchmark, that's where I have to work to. I have to close that gap, so who knows? We might get to the first race and be a lot closer than people expect."

Hamilton's challenge will begin on March 18th in Melbourne. "There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about it," he said. "I am just on a unique rollercoaster ride right now and loving every minute of it, and I can't wait for the first race."
