Spyker announces four test drivers

01 February 2007

The Spyker F1 team came out with a surprising press release this evening when it announced not one, but four test drivers. The team confirmed Giedo van der Garde, who had been linked with Super Aguri, as the team's test and Friday driver. They also announced Adrian Valles (pictured above), Markus Winkelhock and Fairuz Fauzy as the team's test drivers.

Giedo van der Garde came as a big surprise on the list. The Dutchman was announced as Super Aguri's test and Friday driver but it looks like Spyker F1 snatched him away from the Japanese F1 team. Van der Garde was happy with his switch: "It's a proud moment for me to be selected to really start my Formula 1 career with the Dutch Spyker team. I have a lot to learn but this chance will give me everything I need," he said.

Spaniard Adrian Valles was linked earlier this week with the team to become the team's test driver. He raced in the GP2 series in 2006 and had his first F1 test session with the team in September of that same year. Valles said about his F1 deal: "I had a good test with the team last year and I am happy that they have invited me back to play an important role as Spyker starts its ambitious programme."

Malaysian driver Fairuz Fauzy will also join the team as their test driver. Fairuz raced in GP2 and A1 GP. He commented on his signing: "Ever since Formula 1 came to Malaysia, I have dreamed of this opportunity and I am excited to carry the ambitions of my country into the pinnacle of motorsport."

Winkelhock was also testing with the team in 2006. He is glad he can continue his job at Spyker F1. "I really enjoyed the work which I did with the team last year and I am very pleased to be able to continue the programme this year," he said.
