Briatore: Alonso is over-rated

02 February 2007

Renault F1 team boss Flavio Briatore believes Fernando Alonso is an over-rated driver. Alonso left Renault for McLaren this winter after winning the title for the team twice and winning the drivers' championship.

Briatore believes Alonso shouldn't be given legendary status just yet. Briatore told German magazine Auto Motor und Sport: He (Alonso) is good, but not as good as people think.

Briatore was Alonso's manager until the Spaniard joined McLaren at the start of this season. The Italian team boss is also the manager for Kovalainen, Renault's new F1 driver. Speaking about the young Finn he said: "He (Kovalainen) reminds me of Schumacher and Alonso when they were still young, and I can't see any reason why he wouldn't become as good as them."
