De la Rosa wins medal

26 April 2007

McLaren test-driver Pedro de la Rosa has received a medal of honour for his contribution to sport from the Spanish ministry of education and science.

In 1998 the Spaniard started his Formula One career as a test driver for Jordan at the age of 27, having won the Formula Nippon F3000 series in Japan the previous year. The following year in 1999, de la Rosa made his racing debut for Arrows, scoring a point in his first ever race at Melbourne. De la Rosa stayed on for another year at Arrows, before switching to Jaguar at the start of 2001, where he spent two seasons. He then became McLaren test driver and got his chance to race again in the final eight Grands Prix of last season after Juan Pablo Montoya departed to NASCAR. The Spaniard, now 36-years-old, got his first and only podium to date at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
