Doornbos keeping close to Red Bull

Doornbos keeping close to Red Bull

08 May 2007

Red Bull Racing's third driver Robert Doornbos has said that he is still very close to the team despite his racing duties in the ChampCar series with Team Minardi USA. In fact, he believes that his strong performances thus far - two podiums in three races - stands him in good stead for a racing return to Formula One.

"It doesn't hurt my career that I came into a new series like Champ Car and got to spray the champagne in two out of three races," he told formula1.com.

"My aim is to become a successful driver at the highest level possible. My relationship with Red Bull is good and I know that they will keep an eye on my performance in the USA and in the F1 car during testing, so that can mean a way back to F1.

"I still follow very closely what Red Bull is doing and the contact with the engineers I really appreciate, so I know what's going on. They are in the right direction and hopefully they can get some good results this season."

The Dutchman still feels there is a place for him on the F1 grid and suggests that he might be just the man to replace David Coulthard at Red Bull Racing when he retires.

"I feel that as a driver in F1 I took my chances and got the maximum out of it with Minardi in '05 and RBR last year. I had a very strong team mate in David (Coulthard) and I was able to match and better his pace in two out of the three races I competed. It would be great if they get me back!"
