Toyota will try to catch and pass BMW
09 May 2007The Toyota Formula 1 team had a difficult winter. The cologne based team wasn't even close to the top three teams, but during the first three rounds of the F1 championship the team picked up their points placing them in fifth position in the constructors' championship. Toyota Motorsport President John Howett has said the team now eyes to catch BMW and pass them.
Speaking about the challenge Toyota is now facing John Howett said: "There are two or three challenges facing us now the European season is starting. The first is to maintain our position at the top of the second group of teams and make sure we don't slip back. Then, looking forward, the main ambition now has to be to catch and pass BMW as the first step."
So far Howett believes the Malaysian Grand Prix was the team's highlight. He said: "Jarno's performance in Malaysia stands out. It was a great race, no question that is the highlight. But also the reliability is back and we understand the car. We significantly increased the performance and closed the gap on the teams ahead of us between Melbourne and Malaysia. That shows we are able to squeeze more out of the car and the package."
