Ferrari driver Felipe Massa will start Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix from pole position. The Brazilian was only three hundreds of a second faster than Fernando Alonso. Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton will start the Grand Prix from second row.
The first session say Ralf Schumacher, Wurz, Webber, Sutil, Albers and Speed all knocked out - the second Toro Rosso suffering from engine misfiring and Wurz getting stuck in traffic on his flying lap.
Rosberg, Barrichello, Sato, Button, Davidson and Liuzzi all dropped out in the second session.
The pole shoot out was an exciting affair as Alonso threw down the gauntlet with a stunning lap only to have Massa pull a perfect lap together to nip ahead. Raikkonen and Hamilton could do nothing to match the leading duo and start third and fourth ahead of Kubica, Trulli and Heidfeld.
Kovalainen had his best qualifying yet in eighth ahead of Coulthard and Fisichella tenth.
