Lewis Hamilton was on cloud nine after taking his maiden F1 pole position ahead of team mate Fernando Alonso in Canada. Hamilton's pole lap came on his final attempt of the session and a mistake from Alonso in the final sector of his flying lap meant the British driver's landmark pole was secure.
"It's been a fantastic day and already a fantastic weekend," Hamilton beamed. "We've got the pace on the rest and it came down to pulling it out at the last meeting. It's not easy, not least when you have a two-time world champion hunting you down, but I did it."
"The track took a while to learn yesterday - it's quite demanding and technical," he added. "I managed to stay out of the barriers yesterday and overnight think about how I can improve and we improved today. The most important thing in qualifying was that I was consistent in all three sectors and didn't make a mistake and got it."
"Tomorrow's going to be tough as always, but I've not been fortunate yet enough to start from pole so it's another new experience for me," he went on. "I've just got to get a good start and be in the first corner first. I've never felt so good so I'm just looking forward to it."
