'US-market not important enough for F1'

'US-market not important enough for F1'

Formula One surpremo Bernie Ecclestone has said that the United States Grand Prix will not be missed if it is taken away from the Formula 1 calendar. Indianapolis has a contract until the end of the season and has yet to negotiate a deal for 2008.

"It is not vital to Formula One to be in the United States," Ecclestone told told the Daily Express newspaper. "There are bigger markets for us to be in other parts of the world. We could be in India soon instead of the United States. We don't have a lot of sponsors from the U.S., no American teams and only one driver.

"I get along with (track owner) Tony George and I hope we can strike a deal, but we have offers from other places in the U.S. too."

Ecclestone though doesn't think about the huge car market the United States is for car manufacturers such as Mercedes and BMW who see the US as their biggest market outside their home country German.
