Alonso fastest in first practice

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso was the fastest driver in Friday's first free practice session. He was just ahead of BMW driver Nick Heidfeld, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Vettel will be enjoying his Formula 1 race debut on Sunday as a replacement to Robert Kubica.

Free practice got underway at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this morning with Sebastian Vettel as F1's latest rookie driver. The 19-year-old German will replace Robert Kubica this weekend as the Polish BMW driver was not cleared after medical checks. So after many miles of testing Vettel will enjoy his race debut in this Sunday's US Grand Prix.

The practice session was watched by a handful of fans in the grandstands. The enormous grandstands at Indianapolis were filled with just a fan here and there watching the action this morning. The fans that didn't arrive in time for the first free practice session didn't miss a lot. A few drivers went through the grass, among them Kimi Raikkonen, Adrian Sutil and Nick Heidfeld.

The second free practice session will get underway at 14.00 local time.
