Alonso stays top in second practice

Fernando Alonso went fastest in the second practice session for the American Grand Prix with a best time of 1:12.156s. The Spaniard just edged out McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton who was just over a tenth adrift. The two Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen improved on their first practice pace to finish third and fourth fastest.

Nick Heidfeld was best of the rest in his BMW and only 0.192s separated him and his team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who was 11th fastest, which not only emphasises the 19-year-old's impressive performance but also how competitive the midfield is shaping up for this weekend's race in Indianapolis. David Coulthard was a solid sixth fastest in his Red Bull, with Nico Rosberg, Heikki Kovalainen and the two Hondas of Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button rounding off the top ten.

The second practice was again hot and dry with the air temperature averaging at 32 degrees Celsius. David Coulthard showed the Red Bull's pace in the first ten minutes as he went marginally quicker than his first session time before Alonso stamped his authority again at the top of the timesheets. Hamilton then usurped his Spanish rival from the top spot on the 20-minute mark on his first attempt with a 1:12.588s. Soon after Massa showed that Ferrari should not be discounted this weekend by going fastest. The rest of the session was largely uneventful with Mark Webber suffering from more reliability problems as his Red Bull car stopped on the track with 20 minutes to go, ending his session. Anthony Davidson had a minor excursion as well without causing any damage. The McLaren duo finally put themselves ahead of Ferrari in the last ten minutes with Alonso going fractionally faster than Hamilton to take top spot.
