It was only announced on Thursday that he would replace the injured Robert Kubica for this weekend and the German has already shown that he can maintain his impressive pace from testing in the more pressured qualifying set-up.
Mario Theissen, BMW motorsport director, said: "Sebastian did a very good job. He did exactly what we asked him to do. He was able to concentrate, stayed calm and focused."
Willy Rampf, BMW Sauber technical director, commented: "For Sebastian the whole procedure was completely new. To reach the top ten qualifying was the target and we easily made this. Seventh on the grid is a very good result for a debutant who had to jump into the car at short notice. Looking at the long runs we did in free practice, I feel we can expect a good race result."
