Despite meetings during the course of the US Grand Prix weekend between Bernie Ecclestone and Tony George from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the two failed to conclude a new deal to keep the American leg on the calendar beyond this season.
Geroge's organisation has issued a statement saying it has set a deadline of 12 July for a deal to be concluded, or not.
The sticking point is widely believed to be the fact George doesn't want to pay the high price Ecclestone is asking for the rights and in response to try to put pressure on, Ecclestone has gone on the record saying the US race isn't that important to the world tour and that organisers don't do enough to promote the event locally.
Working against Ecclestone, however, is the fact that most teams are keen to keep a race in the US as it is important to a number of major sponsors.
