Ecclestone: "London Grand Prix is too expensive"

06 July 2007

Formula One president Bernie Ecclestone has said there will not be a London Grand Prix in the future. After Formula 1 gave a spectacular street demonstration in London back in July 2004 Ecclestone held talks with mayor Ken Livingstone. But Ecclestone has now ruled out holding a Grand Prix through the streets of London.

"It would be too expensive," said Ecclestone about a possible London Grand Prix. "It was a case of really doing an awful lot of work. The place would be upside down for six weeks. Nice as it would be, I didn't think it was possible."

Ecclestone did admit mayor Livingstone was really enthusiastic on the idea but was not able to come up with enough financial support for the project. "He happy to support it up to a point. But the amount they could support it by wouldn't have been anywhere near enough to make it viable."
