Alonso confident of closing gap to Hamilton

Fernando Alonso is adamant that he will catch Lewis Hamilton in the championship race. The Spaniard believes that he has the upper-hand at the moment after beating his McLaren team-mate by 36.9 second in Sunday's race at Silverstone.

It was the first time in four races that the double-world champion finished above Britain's new hero, although he believes that he has been faster than Hamilton ever since the 22-year-old's maiden victory in Montreal.

Alonso told Spanish newspaper AS: "At some point the gap will close. Since Canada I have been a bit faster than him. At Indianapolis I couldn't get past him, and at Magny-Cours I had a gearbox problem. Here we had a trouble-free race and I finished over 30 seconds ahead of him. There are potentially good races coming up now, like Germany and Hungary and my aim is to finish in front of Hamilton and close the gap. We must not forget the Ferraris, who have been quicker than us again. If Massa did not have that problem at the start, he also would have ended up ahead of Hamilton.

"With normal races, sooner or later I will close the gap. I must always be one step higher than him on the podium. It's a good thing that the championship leader has more difficulties on track, and especially here in England and after pole."
