Lewis Hamilton set the pace on the opening day of testing at Spa Francorchamps today clocking a lap of 1m46.613s to finish 0.4s ahead of BMW's Robert Kubica. Felipe Massa was third for Ferrari.

It was a dry and relatively warm day of consistent weather at Spa, a venue well known for changeable weather conditions. The day was punctuated by a number of red flags including Nelson Piquet Jr whose Renault stopped on track in the morning and Coulthard, whose Red Bull stopped on track mid afternoon.

Tonio Liuzzi caused a red flag when he ran wide and some bodywork flew off his Toro Rosso.

Ralf Schumacher was a surprise fourth fastest ahead of Piquet, Coulthard, Rosberg and Liuzzi. Rossiter was at the wheel for Super Aguri and Klien for Honda.

Down at Spyker, van de Garde was on duty following the news that Christijan Albers had been dropped.

Testing continues tomorrow.
