Hamilton fastest in first practice
20 July 2007 / Results / PhotosLewis Hamilton showed a promising start at the Nurburgring on Friday morning. The McLaren driver completed the fastest lap in the opening practice session. He was two tenths of a second faster than British Grand Prix winner Kimi Raikkonen. Markus Winkelhock enjoyed his debut as Formula 1 race driver.
Free practice got underway this morning at a dry track. BMW showed a strong performance this morning. Heidfeld and Kubica completed a fourth and fifth time respectively.
At Renault the team expected a better performace. Earlier this week their drivers expected the challenge BMW at the front of the field but both Kovalainen and Fisichella were very disappointing in free practice as they ended 18th and 19th.
In his first day as a Formula 1 race driver Markus Winkelhock focussed on getting familiar with the car again and so he completed 30 laps. He was still 1.7 seconds slower than team-mate Sutil though.
