Nurburgring hopes to solve race name problems

Nurburgring hopes to solve race name problems

24 July 2007

This year's Formula 1 race at the Nurburgring was called the European Grand Prix instead of the expected 'German Grand Prix'. The reason was because the German Automobil Club (AVD) own the name 'German GP' and didn't want to loan its rights to the organisers at the Nurburgring. The organisers at the Nurburgring though hope to have solved this problem for 2009.

The FIA decided in the winter that there will no longer be two Formula 1 races in Germany. Having had a race at Hockenheim and the Nurburgring the two tracks will have to share its place on the calendar from now on. It meant that we saw Nurburgring organise the Formula 1 race this year and Hockenheim next year.

In 2008 we will see Hockenheim organise the German Grand Prix, while Valencia has adopted the European Grand Prix title for its race through the streets of its city. In 2009, when the Nurburgring can organise their race again it could become a problem as it is impossible to name two races 'the European Grand Prix'.

The organisers at the Nurburgring are convinced though they can come up with a solution with AvD. Nurburgring GmbH general manager Walter Kafitz told Autosport: "Paramount for me was to have a Grand Prix in the first place, the name has second priority. However, I would have preferred that the race would be called German Grand Prix and due to the upcoming event at Valencia, a solution has to be found in the quarrel between the two German car federations AvD and ADAC about the name.

"But I am hopeful that this will happen. And if not, there will always be another path. It is, after all, easier to find a name than to get a Formula One race."
