Alonso tops washed out day three

Fernando Alonso finished top of the field on the third day of testing this week at Monza despite heavy overnight and morning rain. The reigning champion finished the day almost a second ahead of BMW's Robert Kubica and David Coulthard third.

The rain eased at lunch time and by mid-afternoon the track had dried out. The rain disruption means that a number of teams will now stay on at Monza on Friday to catch up on lost ground.

Felipe Massa was fourth, but his Ferrari ground to a halt at the end of the day. Kubica also caused a red flag late in the afternoon when his BMW stopped on track. Toro Rosso's Liuzzi was fifth ahead of Button, Rosberg, Fisichella, Ralf Schumacher, Yamamoto in the b-spec Spyker and Davidson.
