Indian drivers excited with possible Spyker takeover

Indian drivers excited with possible Spyker takeover

03 September 2007

The Indian race drivers are extremely excited with the news that business tycoon Vijay Mallya could soon take over the Spyker Formula 1 team. Mallya is currently sponsor at the Toyota F1 team but also dreamt about running his own team. F1 test driver Narain Karthikeyan and GP2 driver Karun Chandhok are convinced it will give the Indian market for race drivers a big boost.

Karthikeyan is not making a secret out of it; he would love to race for Mallya's F1 team. "It is fantastic to have an Indian controlling a team in Formula 1," he told the Indian media. "I am the only driver in the country with the super license and my experience as a Test driver with Williams will also come into play. Mallya's brand Kingfisher has also consistently supported me during my career."

But Karthikeyan might see an opportunity to become a Williams F1 race driver. He revealed: "I am in talks with the Williams to find out the nature of my job for the next season. The chances are bright at the team since one of the drivers is struggling to rope in necessary sponsors. But, I have kept my options open and am looking for a better choice."

GP2 driver Karun Chandhok is still focussed on GP2 but would be excited if he would be invited to test with the team. He said: "As far as I am concerned, I am still focused on the GP2 for the remainder of this season. I would like to carry my plan of doing one more year at GP2, but it goes without saying that I will be delighted with any Formula 1 testing opportunity that might present itself."
