Fisichella hopes to stay at Renault
06 September 2007Giancarlo Fisichella's future with the Renault Formula 1 team is uncertain. The Italian's contract with the team expires at the end of the season. A few names are already rumoured in the paddock as a possible replacement, among them Renault's test driver Nelson Piquet jr. and even a possible return of reigning world champion Fernando Alonso is mentioned.

The Renault team experienced a bad start of the season. Rookie driver Heikki Kovalainen was openly criticised by team boss Flavio Briatore but is not very consistent and even ahead of teammate Giancarlo Fisichella in the championship standings. It doesn't worry Fisichella too much. "I do not believe those two points make the difference," Fisichella told British newsagent PA. "Heikki is a good driver and he has worked as hard as I have with the package that we have. I was in front of him until the last race and I could be ahead again after the next one. We work for the team to get the maximum points for Renault."
Fisichella hopes he can stay at the Renault F1 team for another season. Fisichella joined the team in 2005 and enjoyed many successes with the team. "They have to choose very soon if I will be re-confirmed or not," Fisichella said. "Personally, I would like to stay because I have worked very hard and made very few mistakes. There are still five races to go, and each one will be important for the team and myself."
