Alonso eases to Monza pole
08 September 2007 / Results / PhotosFernando Alonso put the pressure on team mate Lewis Hamilton by taking pole position needing just one flying lap in qualifying this afternoon at Monza. Hamilton managed to improve to within 0.037s of Alonso's pole lap, but couldn't beat the Spaniard. Felipe Massa was third, a ful half-second off Alonso's pace.
Fernando Alonso set the early pace from team mate Hamilton while Sato, Ralf Schumacher, Liuzzi, Coulthard, Sutil and Yamamoto dropped out of the first session. Kimi Raikkonen completed an extra run as he tried to get acclimatised to the spare Ferrari following his big crash in morning practice.
In the second session Barrichello ran wide on his final flying lap and dropped out of qualifying along with Webber, Wurz, Davidson, Fisichella and Vettel.
Fernando Alonso's dominance continued in the pole shootout when he set a lap good enough to take first place on his first attempt. Alonso was back on track for a second flying lap but when Hamilton improved, but did not displace his team mate, the reigning champion eased off to save his car. He had gone fastest of anyone in the first sector at that point.
Hamilton was a comfortable second, half a second clear of Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld getting ahead of Raikkonen to take fourth. Kubica took sixth ahead of Kovalainen, Rosberg, Trulli and Button.
