EU ask China to ban tobacco at F1 race

13 September 2007

The European Union's heath commissioner has requested the Chinese government to ban tobacco promotions the Chinese Grand Prix in keeping with EU law. The Chinese Grand Prix will be held in the first week of October.

The European Union's law bans cigarette promotions in printed media, television, radio, internet and tobacco sponsorship such as at Formula 1 races. Markos Kyprianou, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, has told Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong the EU was concerned about images of cigarette advertisements being beamed back into Europe. "It is of concern to us because it is clear our legislation does not have an extraterritorial effect, so it cannot be implemented abroad," Kyprianou told AP. "But the races are being broadcast back to Europe and are being viewed by the European citizens, so in a way it undermines and limits the effectiveness of our own legislation in protecting citizens, especially young people, from this kind of tobacco marketing," he said.

In China the government made an exemption to Formula 1 in terms of tobacco promotions.
