F1 safety to improve next season

According to our colleagues at Autosport.com the FIA revealed plans to further raise cockpit sides to improve protection for Formula 1 drivers next season. The issue was raised after a number of drivers were concerned about their safety in the cockpit.

David Coulthard and Alexander Wurz heavily crashed last year where Coulthard's rear wheel missed Wurz' head with only a few inches. These kind of incidents could go awfully wrong when a wheel would hit a drivers' helmet. A higher side of the cockpit should make the cockpit much safer to drivers.

GPDA director Mark Webber told autosport.com: "It will be great for us. If you look at someone like Tonio Liuzzi, he is not getting the support that he needs, and I am borderline as well. There are a few guys that don't get the protection.

"Both the guys involved in that nasty accident in Australia, Alex and David, were the two guys pushing it very hard. David obviously felt something had to be done after sliding across the car, and Alex felt the same after having an F1 car pass his visor."
