Lewis Hamilton stole pole position from teammate Fernando Alonso in the dying seconds of qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji. Alonso set the marker at 1m25.438s and Hamilton managed to squeeze him out by 0.07s on his final flying lap. Kimi Raikkonen was third for Ferrari, 0.1s down on Alonso.

The session started in very poor weather conditions after morning practice was abandoned due to heavy rain and poor visibility. The circuit was still sodden at the start of first qualifying, but it was barely even raining, so the track conditions improved throughout the session.

That wasn't enough for the home heros as both Japanese drivers on the grid (Sato and Yamamoto) were knocked out in first qualifying and start from the back row. They joined Barrichello, Wurz, Davidson and Sutil in taking an early end to qualifying.

The second session claimed the scalps of Fisichella, Kovalainen,. Coulthard, Trulli, Liuzzi and Ralf Schumacher.

The final pole shoot out wsaw Alonso lead for much of the session until Hamilton edged him out with a last hance lap on an improving circuit. Raikkonen and Massa completed row two ahead of Heidfeld and Rosberg, who despite his strong showing for Williams in sixth will suffer a ten place penalty on the grid for an engine change.

Button impressed in the Honda to finish seventh ahead of Mark Webber, Vettel in a surprising ninth for Toro Rosso and Kubica rounding off the top ten for BMW.
