Berger: Vettel's grid penalty unfair

05 October 2007

Gerhard Berger has said it was not his driver Sebastian Vettel to blame for the German's crash with Webber in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. According to the Austrian it was Lewis Hamilton who was to blame for causing the incident between Webber and Vettel.

In Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel crashed into the back of Red Bull driver Mark Webber in a safety car situation. After the race the stewards punished Vettel with a grid penalty for the Chinese Grand Prix. A video on Youtube though, filmed by a fan from the grandstands, showed Lewis Hamilton slowing down and going wide behind the safety car.

Scuderia Toro Rosso team boss Gerhard Berger believes his driver Vettel is not to blame. He told Premiere: "There was nothing Sebastian could have done in that situation behind the safety car. He couldn't go left to avoid Webber nor could he go right as Hamilton was there. The punishment was totally unfair. I believe it was Hamilton to blame. You could clearly see it on this video online that he was the one that caused the crash between Vettel and Webber.

"It is not up to me though to decide whether or not Hamilton should receive a punishment for his actions behind the safety car."
