Hamilton - I can still do it
07 October 2007 / PhotosLewis Hamilton insisted he can still win the championship despite sliding out of the Chinese Grand Prix as he pitted on very worn tyres.
Hamilton was struggling on track with his tyres for several laps until McLaren eventually called him in, but he didn't even have enough grip to negotiate the pit lane. The McLaren slipped off into the gravel trap and remained beached, ending his race and hopes of winning the title at Shanghai.
"The tyres were finished and these sorts of things happen," Hamilton said. "I'm sorry for the team but I can still do it so don't worry."
"We were having a great race and didn't know if it would rain or not," he added. "The tyres were getting worse and worse - when I came in it felt like I was on ice."
"When I got out the car I was gutted because I haven't made a mistake all year and to do it entering the pits is not something I'd usually do," Hamilton went on. "We've got to look forward to Brazil."
