Formula 1 enjoys return to Montjuïc Park
15 October 2007 / PhotosOn Saturday and Sunday the sound of Formula 1 engines returned to the legendary circuit of Muintjuïc Park in Barcelona. Over 200,000 racing fans witnessed demonstration runs of various Formula 1 cars, among them Marc Gene and Emerson Fittipaldi.
The old circuit, now a public road, closed its doors to traffic to recreate the route of the race track and celebrate its 75th anniversary through a retro motorsport festival - "Martini Legends".
More than 20 Ferraris opened the parade followed by R8's, GT's, Prototypes, Pegasos, Formula 2 and Formula 1.
Ferrari's test driver and Spaniard Marc Gené drove the Ferrari F248 and Emerson Fittipaldi was reunited with his JPS Lotus to drive around the 3.791-kilometre track. "Coming back here after all these years is fantastic," said double F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi. "It's a very special occasion at one of the most beautiful street circuits that ever existed. The last two corners before the pits were something. They were uphill and, in terms of excitement, they were close to Woodcote, the flat-out right-hander we all loved at Silverstone. But Montjuïc meant doing that kind of speed on a street circuit. It was a real challenge."

Marc Gene said about the atmosphere in the park: "This homage has been really special. It is possible that the people that came to watch the event will never see such a fantastic collection of cars ever again. It will be pretty difficult to see so many working historic cars up close as it has been today, and all the more so in Montjuïc where we do not race any more."
