McLaren in no rush to sign second driver

05 November 2007

The McLaren team has said it is in no hurry to sign a replacement for Fernando Alonso. Alonso and McLaren agreed last week it was better for the both of them to go their own ways and thus the Woking based team is on the lookout for a new driver.

Lewis Hamilton already mentioned the name of three drivers who he would prefer to see join his team. He mentioned Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil and Heikki Kovalainen. But according to McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh the team is in no rush to announce Hamilton's team-mate already. "In truth I think we're rather dictating the driver transfer market at the moment," Whitmarsh told The Guardian. "Until the second McLaren drive is sorted out I don't think you'll see much movement, so we're not really hurried.

"Obviously there are some drivers who've approached us who are contracted elsewhere and we've had to say we can't talk to them unless they can prove they are free to negotiate."
