Hamilton may never be champion - Button

12 November 2007

Jenson Button says Lewis Hamilton may have blown his best chance of winning the F1 drivers' championship this year and could retire from the sport without becoming champion.

"Hamilton is a great driver, but there are lots of great drivers in F1 who didn't have his package," Button told the Mail on Sunday newspaper. "What would worry me is the lost opportunity. You can't say in this sport, 'Oh well I only missed out by a point so next year I'll go one better.' It doesn't work out like that."

Button has seen himself replaced as Britain's number one hope last season in a very uncompetitive Honda and has since warned the team he will leave after next season if they fail to show considerable improvement.

"Lewis should be sick as a dog about the lost opportunity because another chance like that might not come round again," Button added.
