The day in Spain was interrupted several times with red flags. Force India driver Giedo van der Garde caused two red flags, while his team-mate Rodriguez also caused one red flag. At Toro Rosso Bourdais caused a red flag as the Frenchman suffered from gearbox problems. Jarno Trulli also stopped proceedings with a Toyota engine blow.

All eyes were on seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher though. The German returned after one year off and immediately showed he is still on the pace. He completed the fastest time of the day, just ahead of Ferrari's test driver Luca Badoer.
