McLaren after rules clarification

McLaren after rules clarification

15 November 2007

McLaren heads to the court of appeal today looking for 'clarification of the rules' according to the team's F1 operation boss Martin Whitmarsh. McLaren is appealing the decision of Brazilian GP stewards not to penalise BMW and Williams for a fuel irregularity.

"It would not be good [if Lewis won the championship after appeal], but we do all need to know how the rules and procedures will operate going forward," Whitmarsh told Autosport. "We lost a constructors' championship at the court of appeal in 1999 when it was, in effect, retrospectively awarded to Ferrari when the ruling that their barge boards were illegal was overturned. We were upset but we accepted it."

"I don't want to anticipate the verdict of the appeal judges," he added. "Finding a way to award the drivers' championship to Lewis retrospectively is not at all what this is about."
