BMW ready to supply other teams with engines

14 January 2008

BMW Motorsport director Dr. Mario Theissen has said BMW is now ready to supply other Formula 1 teams with their engines. At the moment there are four constructors in Formula One that supply other teams with engines.

Currently only Ferrari (Force India, Toro Rosso), Renault (Red Bull), Honda (Super Aguri) and Toyota (Williams) are supplying engines to other teams in F1. BMW and Mercedes are the only engine manufacturers in Formula One that do not supply other teams yet.

Before BMW bought the Sauber F1 team the team was the Williams F1 engine supplier but in 2009 the team might supply a team again with its customer engines. Theissen told GPUpdate.net: "Since last season we are in the position where we can supply other teams with our engines. Our capacity is much bigger since the FIA changed the rules in Formula 1.

"I think teams won't be buying engines only next season but also the entire powertrain. When a Formula 1 team would approach us for engines and it is a solid team we will most likely sign a deal."
