Heikki Kovalainen set the pace on the third day of testing this week at Valencia in southern Spain. The McLaren driver stopped the clock in 1m11s flat, setting a new lap record since V8 engines were introduced.

Kovalainen finished half a second ahead of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen with McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton fourth. Massa suffered a mechanical problem during the day which caused him to stop out on track and limited him to 81 laps.

Nakajuma was fifth for Williams ahead of Fernando Alonso in the 2008 Renault and Nico Rosberg in the other Williams. Webber was eighth in the new Red Bul ahead of Heidfeld, Vettel and Timo Glock.

Rubens Barrichello gave the new Honda its track debut but managed only 36 laps as the team shook the new car down.

In total 17 drivers were in action today.

Over 22,000 spectators turned out to watch the test today.
