The FIA has confirmed that the cost of a Formula One superlicence will increase dramatically in order to help cover the costs of increased safety in the sport.
The cost from this season will be 10,000 euros plus 2,000 euros per point the driver scores in the year. This is a rise from last year's fee which was 1,725 euros plus 456 euros per point scored.
"We spend a fortune on safety and most of it is to benefit the drivers," FIA president Max Mosley confirmed. "These drivers are earning mega-bucks and we're spending a fortune to ensure they're safe, so hence the increase."
