Kimi Raikkonen completed the fastest lap on Friday in Melbourne. The Finn completed his fastest lap on the medium compound, supplied by Formula One's official tyre supplier Bridgestone. The Japanese tyre manufacturer though expects the softer compound should be even faster.

The high temperatures in Melbourne, almost 39 degrees Celsius, were no problem for Bridgestone's tyres. Although some drivers did complaint about tyre graining the tyres performed well under the hot conditions.
According to Bridgestone's director of Motorsport, Hirohide Hamashima, today's fastest lap will be improved in Saturday's qualifying as fastest man on track today, Kimi Raikkonen, completed his fastest lap on the medium compound. "Although we saw today's fastest lap set using the medium compound, I expect the soft compound to be the quicker for most competitors, with the medium offering more durable and consistent performance," said Hamashima. "However, it is very difficult to judge which driver is quicker, as the teams will use different set-ups, for example with fuel load. Although we have high temperatures for Melbourne, we did see a hotter track last season using these compounds, for example in Indianapolis, so we do not have concerns. As expected, the track started dirty and we expect it to improve over the weekend and we should see less graining because of this."
